about

Projektor was formed in 1999 by Jahmeel Russell and Chris Harder. They were soon joined by guitarist Dustin Leader and drummer Darren Achorn. The band signed with Winnipeg's Endearing Records and released their debut album Red Wolf Glass on May 1st, 2001.

Now Locust Hail is proud to release a deluxe version of the album containing three bonus tracks and a 15 page booklet including lyrics, liner notes, and ephemera.

First up is a radio edit of album opener "Foxfire". It was done shortly after the albums completion but ultimately remained unused as college radio quickly got behind the record playing the tracks unedited.
Next up is the very first recording the band did back in early 2000, a demo version of "Double Dragon". Drums on this recording were performed by Joe Fiola who briefly played in the band in its beginnings. This early version was originally released on a long out of print 7".
Finally, the song "Fahrenheit" was the first song written by Jahmeel and Chris when they formed the band in the fall of '99. It was demoed in 2000 but they ultimately decided not to record it for the debut. The demo is presented here for the first time.

Press for Red Wolf Glass:

Red Wolf Glass is a formidable and impressive debut - Popmatters

A Winnipeg rock band with a European aesthetic, Projektor plays spacey, dreamy guitar rock inspired by the likes of Radiohead and Catherine Wheel. The quartet's debut CD is a world - class addition to the genre, for three reasons: a) Vocalist Jahmeel Russell and Dustin Leader can both sing as well as play guitar. Similar modern rock bands are lucky to sport a single decent vocalist; b) The production is clean and clear enough to make intricate layers of interwoven guitar parts sound perfectly audible; and c) The composition strike a nice balance between formless trippiness and pop-oriented melody. Projektor, whose members used to play in much heavier rock bands, is hardly the first North American act to tackle this atmospheric formula. But that doesn't detract from a record that doesn't even have one piece of filler. - Winnipeg Free Press

When you're looking for epic rock that makes you grit your teeth, clench your fists, squint your eyes and say, 'Yeeessss!" you want something with that built in angst but with some soul-padding too- something with give to it that ultimately stirs up all those things you're dissatisfied about. "Red Wolf Glass" is the perfect choice. Mixing the atmosphere and swirl of Brit Pop with the driving guitars and rhythms of brooding modern rock, one might be able to pick out bits of Swervedriver and Radiohead, but will, overall, be floored by that distinctive mix that just can't be pinned down except for with one word. Projektor - CD Baby

This CD shows that yes, Canadians can also gaze at their shoes, and they can do it well. Dark, intense, dynamic, and driving soundscapes that push heavy like dynamic molasses through the atmosphere. There are a few hints of that post-hardcore edge and angst in the vocals, reminiscent of other Canadian band, By A Thread, but the smoothness of the music and the thickness of the almost orchestral guitars makes my ears head more towards bands like Swervedriver. Sometimes the fullness spreads out until all you are left with is a subtle bass line and soaring brit-pop vocals that would fit in alongside bands like The Doves and Coldplay, and then it builds back up into epic life. The lyrics touch upon a gothic poeticness, but the music lifts you out of the shadows... - The Big Takeover

I tend to shy away from most indie rock with vocals, because the underlying music is usually ignored in favour of (poorly written) lyrics with affected vocal stylings. Projektor, however, have found a balance between the two, creating a rhythmically atmospheric album with solid drumming, lovely melodic lines (in both vocals and guitar), punctuated with clustered guitar textures and an overall sparseness that shows confidence and competence in their playing. The lack of vocal pretension refreshing; instead, the lyrics are simply delivered, allowing the music to compliment them and vice versa. Apparently they're all the rage back home in Winnipeg, which I certainly have no trouble believing. - Offbeat
